Introduction
Nutrition is the science that deals with all the various factors of which food is composed and the way in which proper nourishment is brought about. The average nutritional requirements of groups of people are fixed and depend on such measurable characteristics such as age, sex, height, weight, degree of activity and rate of growth.
Health Nutrition
Good nutrition requires a satisfactory diet, which is capable of supporting
the individual consuming it, in a state of good health by providing
the desired nutrients in required amounts. It must provide the right
amount of fuel to execute normal physical activity. If the total amount
of nutrients provided in the diet is insufficient, a state of under
nutrition will develop.
Nutrition is one key to developing and maintaining a state of health
that is optimal for you. In addition, a poor diet coupled with a sedentary
lifestyle are known to be risk factors for life- threatening chronic
diseases and death: Heart disease, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes and
some forms of Cancer. Together these diseases account for two- thirds
of all deaths in the United States. The major health problems in the
United States are largely caused by excessive energy intake and not
enough physical activity.
Health is defined by the World Health Organization of the United Nations
as the “ State of complete physical, mental and social well- being and
not merely the absence of disease and infirmity (or ill- health/illness)”.

Eating a wide variety of nutritionally balanced foods is the key to
normal growth, development, activity and reduced risk of diseases in
children and teenagers. What they eat today determines their health
and fitness now and for the rest of their lives.
Children and teenagers need 2 to 4 times more energy and nutrients for
their body size in comparison to adults. These nutrients include Proteins,
Carbohydrates, Vitamins, Minerals and Fats- they help children to grow
up with strong bones and muscles, healthy teeth, hair and skin, good
vision and sharp mental skills.
Sports nutrition
Physically active people show lower risks or coronary heart diseases
, hypertension and stroke, type 2 diabetes , obesity, and other common
chronic diseases.
A popular sports nutrition dietary fad revolves around the myth that
high- carbohydrate diets impair athletic performance and makes athletes
fat. Food has tremendous impact on complex hormonal systems that help
to control physiological processes such as cellular oxygen transfer,
maintenance of blood glucose and regulation of body fat.
Athletes must eat the perfect ratio or proteins, carbohydrates and fat
at each meal and snack to control hormonal systems and to reach the
maximum performance and ideal weight. The perfect ratio consists of
40% of carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat at each meal and snack.
